Imperative? I wouldn't say imperative. If your bike is relatively new you'll be OK for a while. The taller you go the more imperative it becomes. Problem is that the cheap rubber ones they give you wear out quicker and taller bars speed up the process. You will have to take everything apart and do them again someday. I'd suggest picking some up. They are cheap enough, and you don't want to do the job twice.
