I Screwed Up - BIGTIME! HELP?
BP, do you have access to a 2004 HD Service Manual? I ask because Section 8.18 includes a section on removing the ignition **** on HDI (International models) and has an exploded view of the ignition switch assembly.
Comparing that picture with the picture of the Domestic ignition swith **** at page 121 shows the switch ***** are different. However, the text for both domestic and International models for ignition switch **** removal are exactly the same: turn the ignition **** to UNLOCK, insert key, turn **** to ACCESS, depress the release button on the bottom left of the **** with a small screwdriver while turning the key courterclockwise 60*. Lift and remove ****.
Since the directions are the same, your problem is (probably) the spring prevents the **** from being pushed down enough to move the **** to the ACCESS position. So, either press down harder to compress the spring enough for the **** to move to the ACCESS position, or use a hooked pick tool or something similar to pull out some of the spring from under the **** to allow you to eventually move the **** to the ACCESS position so you can press the release and rotate the key.
You may also want to find out the cost of a replacement "switch position plate" that's under the **** 'cause you may need to break it out of there in order to get to the spring.
Sorry to hear of your troubles; hope you find a solution soon.
