Dealer told me I didn't need CR when they installed the 103 w/ 255 cams on my 08 RK. I had problems with hot starts after gas stops. Went through a starter clutch. I bought the Hi Torque starter and SE Compensator. When another Dealer went to install it they found crank runout was pretty bad and replaced everything under warranty. While they had the heads off I had manual releases installed. Parts were under $100 and 1 hr labor for machining. I would recommend getting releases for a 103 build.

In this months American Iron magazine in the Q & A section somebody wrote in with the same hot start problem and they really didn't have an answer other than possibly running rich causing deposits on pistons increasing compression? AI recommended he contact a builder look at it for an answer.

My Ultra is 9.8:1 and I went ahead and put them in. I was told that in all likelihood I would never need to use them but better safe than sorry. I would hate to be on a trip and stranded because I saved the $40 for compression releases. I use mine on occasion when we stop and restart the bike when it is hot. I do it just out of convenience....not out of necessity.

I have the same experience. I'm on a 2005 FLHRI with 95" Performance Revolution jugs/pistons, S/E heads, S&S 510G cams and a Horsepower Inc. throttle body (I forget what throat). Anyway, the heads came with CR's and I use them routinely for cold starts but it's amazing how much less starter effort it takes on a hot start with the CR's open.

I guess it comes down to your definition of "have to" vs. "should".
