Lock and alarm everywhere, I'm am a service tech (fitter) and its a habit. I known what a thief can do to your work van in seconds, no matter how nice it is where you live.
Nothing worst than a thief.
I am mildly amused at all the responses with junkyard dogs as security. I just watched a cable program about reformed burglars counseling homeowners on security. The thiefs just walked right up to the most vicious looking dogs with a steak in hand and the dog went on break while the thiefs cleaned out the house. All cleaned out of valuables in less than 10 minutes.

I've heard of these bastages lacing the meat with anti-freeze and then there's no more dog either.
As I have read through the responses in this post I am interested in the wide variety of responses. I do take exception with being considered paranoid because I lock up in the garage. I rather think of it as being responsible. I do live in a good neighborhood and expect that there won't be a problem but all someone has to do is wheel it out of the garage and down the road a bit when I'm in my backyard mowing. I would hear it fire up but by the time I get to the front it would be gone. Just like the movie "Gone in 60 seconds." It takes very little time to steal as it takes only 2 seconds to lock it. I have total confidence that some men will do something stupid when an opportunity presents its self. Up here in the Pacific North West we have so many freaking crack heads running around that you can't be sure of anyone. And while a lock won't stop someone that is determined to take something it does keep most from trying so it is worth 2 seconds of my life every time.
