Default 10 Years from now....

Where do you see HD heading with regards to the touring bike designs?

I was just wondering what sort of advancements they will introduce...

I was at the premier launch of the Honda VFR 1300 (I think)... believe it or not, they have a Triptronic gear on that bike!!! and a Hand break!! whats next?!? I look at the Victory bikes (I hate their designs) they look like they are from outer space... will HD make the mistake of heading into futuristic designs?

I hope not, but 10 years is a long time.... Honda has always been pretty innovative, they had an "Automatic" back in the late 70s. You had to shift it, but no clutch.

I'm not sure if Harley-Davidson is doing this on every model but if they are still using 3 man teams to build bikes not on an assembly line, they will not continue to remain competitive. Because of the nature of the traditional design of Harley's in general, it make them difficult to build on an assembly line. I also think the engines on most if not all Harley's will be liquid cooled similar to the V-Rod.

S.O.S. (same ole sh*t) is their moto right now.
Trust me, I have connections.

The emissions standards will push some engine changes. They can get our big twins just so hot before they melt.
As you can tell the '09s are hotter than '08 and the '10s hotter again, cat converts, etc.

Soon they will have to pump the exhaust into the carb to recycle it and the final exhaust up our pants to make us go light on the throttle. ;-)

I had a V-Rod before this SG and loved that bike/engine. But I like this torque better.

I would like to see them redo the batwing
Put on controls that make sense
Intergrate a real car like GPS system, like a 7" touch screen
If we are willing to pay $20K + seems it should have all this stuff

I don't think they'll change much in the next 10 years. The FLH design has not changed all that much astetically since the '60's.

I'm sure the newest design of the frame will be around in 10 years if not longer.

I look for them to add an automatic transmission or, at least, a no clutch transmission very soon. They are already asking about it in their owner surveys so I am pretty sure we will see it on maybe one or two models and my guess is that it will be available first on the trike.
As others have said, I agree that we will probably also be seeing a liquid cooled engine pretty soon. In as far as the bike design goes, in looking back over the past 10 years, I really don't expect much in changing the physical appearance of the bike.

An inovation I'd like to see is the foot brake that actuates one of the front calipers and the rear. Some kind of proportioning valve would have to be used to control the pressure to the front caliper. The hand lever would actuate the other front caliper.
Would probably add another $1000 to the price though!!
