Metal mesh filters are the only oil filters used on military and Commercial aircraft engines. And a little info for you dino guys, they only use synthetic oil too.
Guys, .
This is not completely accurate.... The T-56 does still use a paper element for scavenge oil and the metal type filter for pressurized oil.. Though I do agree that the metal mesh filters like the K&P are superior...
As long as it looks good on the outside, right? Chrome will get you home.
I don't buy Chrome oil filter's, I pay 7.95 at my local Dealer for the black HD filter. Works for me! I will however look into buying some K&P stock.
After the plant's posting on this forum, I'm sure sales will be up.
... A used oil analysis is your best indicator and cheap compared to a rebuild. We send in a U.O.A. For our forklift every 200 hrs and I piggy back one for my mustang and bike.
Most of us don't have the luxury of being able to piggyback oil samples from our personal vehicles with one from our work. If you tried that where I work, you'd get fired.

A paper filter filters better than a re-useable one and it's efficiency goes up as the filter is used. 35 microns is half the size of a human hair. Now we all tend to use a k&n or oiled foam filter which sucks for filtration but looks nice. Silica(sand) is an engines biggest enemy and the filter we love allow quite a bit of silica into the combustion chamber and it ends up in the oil. Now the paper filters will filter out most of the silica in the first pass thereby saving the cylinder walls from being scored. Use whatever you like but be informed. That's exactly why I repeated Blackstone's feelings that the K&P removed more silicon particles than the paper filters. This is not that difficult. Paper filters start to bypass when partially clogged and always bypass during full throttle acceleration because these filters are restrictive and can't flow enough oil. Again, simple physics.
Some one said no horse power gain. Another incorrect statement. It takes some power no matter how small to try and cram high oil flow through a restrictive paper filter, that's why they bypass so frequently. Less restriction means more power. Same with less restrictions in the intake and less restrictions in the exhaust. Less restrictions anywhere normally equals more power. Does an engine that runs 60 weight oil produce the same power that one running on 20-50 makes? Of course not, not a large gain but still a gain. Just sayin!
There seems to be a few misconceptions about this filter, the biggest of which is the particle filtration size. The correct size is 15 microns or 50% larger than the H-D Premium throw-away. 50% may sound large, but 15 microns is not. Since the paper filter does clog sooner forcing a by-pass, it is essential to perform scheduled oil changes on or before 3000 miles of normal use. With the K&P and running synthetic, you can push that number as long as the oil level is maintained since it doesn't clog.
And no-one has discussed the additional oil cooling effects of the housing (heat is THE #1 H-D enemy!); nor have they discussed the ability to SEE the debris without a god-awful mess.
I picked-up an S4 for my FLHTK from http://www.ironacesspeedshop.com/pro...e/oil-filters/ - these guys are awesome! Since an oil change at Milwaukee Harley is $136.23, my filter will pay for itself in 3 changes plus 20 minutes each time, and, I get the benefit of knowing I did it instead of the 18 year old summer tech helper!

Oh hell...prob best to keep that one to yourself. Blend is your friend.
