Any Road Glide owners who change windshields,I imagine will be able to answer this. The well nuts that anchor the windshield screws, can replacement well nuts be "snapped" into place without having to remove the outer fairing?? The last time the dealer stripped out two and he replaced them, and I wasn't around to watch. Thanks in advance!
I'm not sure about the "snapped".... but, you unscrew the screws in the well nut, smooth the well nut, and slip the well nut into the hole in the fairing.
the fairing remains ON the bike at all time.
I cheat, and dab some blue silicone on the well nut before I begin tightening the screws. Seems to work for ME
Make sure you have spare well nuts, as they have a habit on slipping through the hole into the fairing.
They're cheap enough to have a dozen on hand at all times
The well nuts as you call them slide in from the outside. When you tighten the nut it expands the rubber locking it against the back side of the fairing.
You have to be careful when trying to start the screw in the nut. If you push to hard the rubber flange on the nut will fold back and the nut will push thru the fairing and fall into the bottom. Clearview is smart and when they sell you their windshield they have plastic washers that go over the well nut to prevent the flange from being pushed thru the fairing when trying to start the screw in the nut.
I use these small flat washers on mine to prevent that. I have changed Windshields numerous times trying to get what i like thats how i know what happens. I currently have a couple inserts laying in the bottom of my fairing waiting for retrieval next time the fairing is off.
Don't pay the dealers prices.....check your local hardware stores.
Ace, True Value, Homer Depot, etc, etc, etc..........
After you lose one or two inside the faring , you'll get the knack for the changes.
Ya, I think I paid like .85 cents for them at a local true value. I know they were less then a buck and well worth having in the garage when you need one.
Thanks everyone for your help. I'll check my Canadian Tire and Hardware stores for them after I pick up a good one from my dealer. You really can't beat the advice/help available on this site! Good people,Great Bikers. (with a few exceptions)
This kit has hard plastic well nuts that wont fall through. I bought this kit and it works great, no more pulling the fairing off to get the nuts that were pushed through.
