Hi all,
I currently have the $150 stage 1 ECM flash loaded on my bike with my ventilater intake/V&H slip-ons. I bought a SEST over the winter for future use with a 103" build. The local dealer will connect the SEST and download the SEST stage 1 map for virtually free. I will wait till the work is all done to get a custom map but wondering if any appreciable differences between the stage 1 flash and the SEST stage 1 map ? Gotta admit the bike seems to run well now. Will the SEST mapping help to the extent to make it run a bit cooler ? One generic better than the other ?? Thanx...
I've had good luck with the downloads when I only do the a/c and slippons. Long as it doesn't ping, have decel pop, or run noticeable hotter... then you are probably fine.
I kinda go with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." But in your case, with the tuner in hand and map free, you might want to do that. I suspect the map that comes with the tuner is probably very similar to the map you already have loaded..but I really don't know for sure.
My thinking (oh oh), is that the $150 stage 1 flash is a EPA compliant download. The SEST is a "race" only device, so maybe it's a little more fuel/timing intensive with the SEST stage 1 map ? Yeah, as long as it's not any worse but once the SEST map is loaded, the Stage 1 flash is gone for good (so I understand)...
Well, I just had my $150 stage 1 ECU flash overrode today with my SEST/Stage 1 map. I can't tell any real seat-of-the-pants performance difference. But what I can hear is that their is less popping on decel and it is much smoother when rolling off the throttle. I didn't have it thrown on the dyno to see if their is actually any difference but the above results lead me to think so .....
You guys are aware that the "flash" does nothing but raise your redline to 6200 correct?? It does NOTHING to the fuel delivery or AFR.......... I stumbled onto this a few years back when I had purchased one......dynoed before and after and the only thing that changed was a bump to 6200.............went back and asked a tech and he confirmed........

Did not know that. Seems like a waste of money if it's $150.
