I wanted the same thing you did, and am kinda cheap. All I could find for head pipes were 400 bucks. Then I found Full Sac. They use parts of your old system. For 179 you get 2 plasma coated (or black) pipes, a rear exhaust gasket, and a mandrel to round out your pipes for a good fit. Less than an hour to install if you do it their way, took me longer cause I took the whole system off and replaced rusty hardware, pulled the cam cover to check the tensioners, etc. I combined their headpipes with Krome Werks 3.5 in mufflers ($459) Very satisfied. At cruise, a comfortable rumble that sounds like an HD should. No radio interference if you have one to listen to. Full throttle acceleration gives a throaty roar with no sharp high freq "blatting" that I hate so much. Both companies make a nice product, 16 ga. metal, mufflers well chromed. I recommend them both. If you plan to use stock mufflers, make sure you open the baffle on the left one as they come with more restricted flow than the right one from the factory. I found no loss of tq on the butt dyno. I have a stock 88 with Big Sucker, the aforementioned pipes, and a stage 1 download.

got some rinehart td's on mine. Made by bub. They have a good little rumble to them and are loud when I get on it. Sound pretty good on the road to me.

I just put on Rinehart TD's and at first felt a loss at the lower end. I was really happy with the sound, but not sure with the loss. I adjusted the 5,10 and 15% throttle values on the PC V up a bit after talking with Keith at Fuel Moto. Now it has great low-end power and sounds even better.

The Rineharts are loud so you might want to factor that into your decision.

On basically stock bikes, true duals will slightly decrease lower end tq but will you notice - maybe, maybe not. Are they overated, well based on what? If it is the look and sound you want and you are not chasing numbers - go for it. A good two into one is not "necessary" in any case, it is all up to what you want. HD's head pipes really aren't all that bad (excluding stuffing a cat in the 2010's) and just going with the right slipons and a good tune can be a nice gain.

You are right, the larger the engine, the better they work but will still not get you to the same place as a 2-1, but will in a lot of cases outperform a 2-1 at upper to high rpms, and that is what you see on your dyno chart. If you had a chart of say, the 60kpa area at 2500-3000, you would find tht most 2-1 really outperfomr true duals. It is all in what you want, the sound, looks and performance, are all personal choices. Many go with TDs for the looks, or sound, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Default Just a day at the beach.

Not only does it open up the engine area, looks cleaner and sounds deeper...

The girls like it better too!

Now there's a selling point!

I recommend the TRUE DUALS. HD dyno test were positive with about about 0.12 more HP.

+1 it is funny, I hope he didn't have to pay dyno rates to confirm that...

Great point. I guess I'm trying to work out that equation of how much effect on power am I willing to put up with to lose the heat on my leg. I love to agonize over these things.
