I may have missed it, but I don't see where he has specified it's the (expensive) vertical brackets that run up besides the stereo. If the broken brackets happen to be the horizontal kind that run out to the ends, then buying new HD brackets for $8 each is the better route. The newer brackets have been redesigned (from the 2001 model at least) and appear to be sturdier. If the broken brackets in question are in fact the vertical kind, just buy 2 - 2" galvanized L-brackets and some 10-32 screws. I used the nylon nuts that don't back out. Best and cheapest way (and likely better) way to fix this issue.

I'm w/mrwizard on this one. I've read/heard of this problem on other HD forums & hope to see a recall/tech bulletin to repair the problem. Right now we're just adding $$$ to HD's parts dept. In most cases it seems like the "self-fix" is cheaper & better for now.
