on a scale of 1-10, (1 being an oil change), what would you guys say changing cams is? I want to put some $ into my engine (09 ultra), and the more i can do myself, the more i have for parts.
Is doing a cam job risky? -- ie easy to screw up, and damage stuff?
If you have an 07 or later then the job should be easy. Getting the exhaust on and off was the most challenging part of the project. Changing the cams out was the most interesting part.
I did the same project over the winter. Here is the write up. Also, look up iClick's write up as well.

Cams are easy...like the other guy said the exhaust is probably the hardest part. Getting the adjustable pushrods adjusted can be tough....but just take your time. other than that piece of cake.

If you have moderate mechanical skills and a service manual you can do it. Atrain68's tutorial is excellent, and I did one about a year ago here. JDReed520 is right that dealing with the exhaust system is the most aggravating part of the job, and I'll add that if you re-use the stock pushrods getting the rocker covers, plates, etc. removed and re-installed is tedious. But once you start to work on the cam chest you should be in and out in two hours, even if you are meticulous and double-check everything like I did.

**** happens, so there is always potential risk for anything you do--but IMO if you follow the manual and take your time you can do it with little chance of problems. Be advised that '06 and earlier models (older TC engines) will require the outer bearings to be pressed out and back in. Newer models do not require this step.
Take your time, and do it. I was a bit worried, but I read a lot and took my time. The adjustable pushrods were the most tedious for me, since like a lot of guys, I was worried about tightening them too far. But man, am I glad I installed these Woods now!!
I did it myself. I assumed (I know, I know) when the timing marks were lined up, #1 cylinder was at TDC. That isn't the case. So needless to say, I had to readjust my pushrods. If you follow directions, doing this job yourself is kind of fun and it is definately satisfying. Reviewing everything you get your hands on in this forum on the topic is certainly helpful. Good luck

Would you please explain this statement to me. I am not trying to be a smartass and I have a reason for asking. Not trying to hijack a thread either. I am having a problem with my scoot after I swapped the cams. I like to learn from my mistakes (assuming I made one) and hopefully it will help someone else avoid the issue that I am experiencing. I will post after I read your reply.
To the OP, shop manual and correct tools. If you know which end of the screwdriver to hold, you can do it.
