I guess you have a valid point. However, if you read a Mustang mag, or a 'tuner' mag, they're all doing pretty much the same things to their cars.
I subscribe to Mustangs and Fast Fords and they will always feature a realitivly brand new Mustang that has been modded with headers, mufflers, cold air intake and a tuning device. They also often replace the cams with aftermarket.
Could it be that it's just the nature of the vehicle that lends it self to be 'hopped up'?
BTW. I have a 2010 FLHTK that is stock but my Mustang has the exhaust, intake ect.
There is a difference with wanting to hop your vehicle up to get more juice out of it and a loss of power when it gets hot. I mean this is noticeable.
I have a 04 Dyna since new, GREAT! However, I just bought a 2005 Road King Deluxe w/550 miles on it, bike is like new. It sat in unheated shed while not being used. Engine runs great until it gets hot, then stumbles, pops and miss's at low rpm, when throttle is about closed. As soon as I give it throttle and raise rpm, it clears up and runs great. I rode it 150 miles yesterday and checked mileage, 49.5 mpg, this is with most of ride in a lower gear to avoid the popping and missing at low rpm's. It is obviously running way too lean. I changed plugs and all fluids when I got bike 2 weeks ago. I checked the speedo codes and none indicated a problem. Anyone have any ideas? Ron
Well said bagger90. I guess I'm lucky (so far). In 6 weeks of ownership on my first harley, I've put on 6500 miles. Lot's of highway at 80 mph as well as back road scenic routes and I've had none of the problems described on this thread.
However, my right side header pipe has turned blue behind the heatshield so I'll have that looked at.
The deal where it goes to 1 cylinder at idle seems to work fine and I just either start letting the clutch out or give it gas to reingage both cylinders a few seconds before taking off.
My wife and I love the bike and I'm getting used to where to position my right thigh (over my head would work) to avoid being charbroiled.
As said by previous posters, it's a shame to spend so much money and then feel that you have to spend thousands more to make it run different. Maybe different isn't required (I don't know).
Anyway, I've had goldwings and both of us prefer the harley simply because it's more of a motorcycle experience. The goldwings seem too refined to us.

I have not experienced any power loss when the bike is hot. Not when it was stock and not now with pipes, breather and tune. Very happy with the bike.
Do you have your stock pipes and mufflers?
Can I trade my stock ones for yours?
Maybe there is a bad batch of CAT's and mufflers out on some of these bikes. ken.rhoads@us.army.mil
I have a 2010 FLHTK with about 1200 miles on it. I was wondering if it was my imagination but reading these posts makes me realize it is the bike. I noticed a pretty significant power loss on hot days. I owned a 09' Road King stock and never had an issue. The 103 does not seem to run nearly as strong which makes no sense to me. At this point it is completely stock. I took it back for the 1K and the dealership told me there was nothing wrong with it? I doubt they put it on the dyno. 6th gear on this bike is a joke. Absolutely zero power in 6th, and I know it is an overdrive gear, put my RK never had an issue. With this bike I'm cruising at 75mph and pull on the throttle and get ZIP NADA the speedo doesnt budge. Between this issue and the rear brake shuddering I'm about ready to push this sucker off a ravine. At least it has a nice ride, when the air shocks aren't losing air pressure that is. For 25K plus, this bike is a huge dissapointment.

Give Jamie at Fuelmoto a call, and you will not be disappointed with your bike anymore. In the matter of fact, I was in the same boat as you, until I did upgrade to the Fuelmoto power package. I can accelerate from 60 to 90 MPH in the 6th gear without any sign of powerless.
I love the upgrade so much that I have written some review about the upgrade. Review is in my sig.
It is a really worth money to spend for this one!

Ok I have followed this thread for some time now and at first I thought all was good once I made the required mods to dump the cat and get a dyno tune.
I went to FL. a couple of weeks ago and was riding in 99* temps in stop and go traffic and the bike ran like $H!T. It really was a pain to take off at a light the bike felt like I was taking off in 3rd. Needless to say it was not a lot of fun in traffic.
I return home to MO. and of course the heat wave followed me here from FL. Once again the bike was running poor from start until highway speeds when it cooled down a litle. After reading this thread and people talking about timing I remembered when I was tunning on my FI hotrod there were different fuel maps for low octane. The knock sensor would activate and the computer would pull timing if it sensed a knock. I watched the program switch maps on the hotrod to the low octane map and I would lose power.
Going off the theroy that the new HD works the same I went to 93 octane and went on a long ride in 99* temps including some traffic and hills etc. The bike ran great no issues. I have been riding it this week in very hot weather and I have not had a problem.
Just guessing here but maybe the compression is on the upper edge of where regular works and obviuosly temp and humidity reduce power and increase the chance the engine will knock.
Whatever the cause I seem to be at least at this point overcoming it with octane.
Now if only I could overcome the water loss of riding in 100* + temps maybe I would not feel like crap after a 8hr ride in the heat.
