Just removed my element, cleaned and sprayed with cleaning product. It then has you rinse from clean side (I presume inside?) and let dry naturally. Any recommended shortcuts to drying and what exactly constitutes dry? If allowed to dry naturally how long should I let it sit? I appreciate any help.
i have been using K&N elements for a very long time, 20 years, both street and dirt. Any shortcut to drying may hurt the gauze. If you dry the gauze too fast the fibers may shrink and open up the spacing allowing larger particles of dirt thru. I have made every mistake you can make with K&N type filters due to my impatience. I have learned to just shake them till no more water comes off , then set it in a sunny well ventilated area to facilitate drying. As far as when is it dry?, I usually wait at least a hour before applying oil, if the conditions for drying are good. Waiting for a filter to dry on a great riding day is a buzzkill.
Well it is an overcast day here so I decided to clean the bike and take care of the filter. The fan idea Bill03E suggested worked great and now with the oil applied it looks like new again with the pink hue. Now I want to give the bike a thorough washing and finish off with Pledge but it is sprinkling now. Hoping to get a chance to get it looking good as I am taking it to Pittsburgh mid week next week as long as the weather holds up.
I like heywood727's suggestion of having a backup on hand and may look into it but I'm sure they aren't too cheap. I am going to try a search but if anyone knows where to get a new filter at a fair price I would appreciate if you could post it. Thanks all !!!!
I've had K&Ns on a handful of my cars / trucks and I always let the filter sit overnight. That is just my preference last thing you want is a bit of H20 getting sucked into the engine.
Buy a spare.I have 2,put yhe clean one on and go then clean the other.Wait for the other one to dry oil it up and wrap it in glad wrap. That way you alwas have an oiled up one ready to go.
