I rode my bike this morning then came home to change the oil in all three holes. I am fairly experienced working on bikes and use a torque wrench so I don't over tighten things. I went to tighten the primary drain, set the torque wrench to 14 lbs (low end of 14-21 ft-lbs in the manual) and hand tightened the plug. When I went to tighten it with the wrench it just spun. I backed it out and the threads came with it. I have a trip coming up and no shops were open so panic was setting in. I got on here and did a search and found a tip about a 12-20, 1 over self tapping drain plug. Picked one up at the auto parts. It worked like a charm! Saved my bacon again. Thanks HD forums!
Have to agree, I think this forum cost me as much money as it saves me. Actually, it does save me money on the things I discover that I just have to have!
Love It! Thanks to all those that put up the valuable information.
The forum is a wealth of information both useful and useless.
Just a comment on your use of a self tapping plug. It is only going to serve as a temporary fix. Every time you remove and then re-install the plug it is going to try again cut "new" threads. So after a few times you will have to go up to next larger size which would be a double oversized. Although it will serve your needs just fine for now, I would keep my eyes open for a slighty used (or new) primary cover. Just be resolved to the fact that, sooner or later, you will have to come up with a more permanent solution.
