Default need Advice on buying

Hello Everyone. My name is Chris, im 24 and live in peoria, il. I have been looking for a bagger for the last few months and thought Id stop in here for some advice.

A little background on myself, I started riding when i was 8, and have owned quite a few bikes over the years. The most recent was my 00 Buell X1 lightning racing stripe limited edition. I ended up selling it to my dad to fund a project car that I consequently just finished.

Well now that the car is done I am going to sell it and buy a bagger.

Id REALLY like to have a Street Glide, but cant afford one, so ill just make my own (or own version). I plan to spend hopefully less than $10k.

I really dont know much at all about Harleys and hopefully you guys can help me out.

Let the questions begin:

At what mileage do the motors generally need rebuilt?

should I be looking for a Evo or a Twin cam? (reliability and power wise)

Is there anything in particular I should be looking or listening for in terms of wear or problem areas?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here is a picture of the Buell BTW:

I look forward to reading as much as i can as quickly as I can and hopefully educate myself to make a good decision before buying a bike, and modding the hell out of it lol.

JMO. I'd start out looking at 02 EG Classic's or Standards.
The Classic would probably be easier to clone. 02 is suppose
to be the twin cams good year. Mileage, 100,000 plus. The
problem area would be the cam chain tensioners, and primary
chain shoe. Easy motor upgrades. Under 10K, might be tough.

For 10 grand.... you can (or should be able to) get any EVO, or even early TC-88..... porbably NOT a "street glide". but certainly an Electra Gide Standard.... heck I see a lot of EVO ultras on craigslist.

I'm partial to the Road Glide.... when I bought mine, they were unpopular, and I paid thousands less than comparable street glides or road kings.....which suited ME....

I'm not aware, or a "lifetime" on either engine, and there are examples of both EVO's and TC-88 lasting well past 150-200k.... Just make sure that any TC-88 has either LOW miles... or the cam tensioners have ben addressed.

If you are confident in your mechanical skills, trust your judgement... if you have any doubts, fork over the cash, to a shop for a full inspection....

Well my current financial situation has changed and it looks like my budget just changed from $10k to $8500. I hope I can still afford a lower mileage twin cam. The search continues....

an 07 Classic on an $8500 budget? $10,000 maybe if someone really needs the money and it has higher mileage. Is it a Salvage for under $8500?

I would really check into that bike. That is a really low price for that bike. Make sure for certain it is not a salvage, you don't want one of those! also make sure it is not HOT!
