I just greased mine today with the straight fitting with no problem. I didnt think it would ever stop taking grease though. It took a good forty to fifty pumps before I started to see any grease comming out. I guess the factory missed and the dealer during the 1000 mile service.
You'll be sorry you dumped that much grease into the steering head. I predict it'll puke grease out the bottom of your bearing each time you ride for the next several months. A couple pumps is all it ever needs. I learned this the hard way - just as you are about to do.

Great[] I just posted in another post about mine taking about 50 pumps or so to get the grease coming out. Oh well I'll just keep an eye on it.

That's great info, just getting ready to do mine.

I called harley tech in WI. and told them I had to pump a ton of grease into the fitting until it started to come out at the top and bottom of the neck (as indicated in the service manual) then I stoped. I ask why so much grease and they told me at the plant they grease the bearings as the front end is being assembled and when the 1000 mile service is done it takes a lot of grease because you are filling the entire neck. Well anyway I have put almost 3000 miles and the grease isn't coming out no problem here.

Roady,
How the heck did you get your grease gun tip on to that straight zerk??? My 04 Road Glide had the straight zerk and there was no way in hell that I could get a grease gun on that fitting, even with a 90° grease gun tip. It was all up in the bracketry for the fairing. I had to change mine out to a 90° zerk.

Heard same as mentioned earlier, bearings are greased at the factory, but the neck isn't filled - that's why it takes 40 or so pumps the first time it's greased. Mine did the same. I've had no grease weeping problems at all. Word of warning, I was told to use only the HD grease that is called for as it's a different formula than other greases and will resist weeping out on hot days. Don't know how true that is, but that's what the dealer and an Indy told me. I went with what HD spec'd and have had no problems.
