If any of you left lane huggers ever get to ride on German autobahns you have a shock coming! Flashed headlights do not mean get out of the way, they mean if you are still there in the next heart beat this two ton Mercedes travelling at 155mph will be through you. May alternatively be an Audi, Porsche - put in your favourite German brand. Chances are it has one of the other brands tail-gating it, waiting for the moment when IT can get by! Smaller German cars pass and cut right back in, no doubt for survival reasons! That's a good model to follow.
I typically ride a tad faster then traffic on the Eway, and usually in the left lane. Anywhere from 75 - 90. I do that for a couple reasons:
A) I like to ride fast.
B) The left lane is usually the safest, in my opinion, because you don't deal with merging traffic, and usually have an escape route (shoulder), which I've used several times, over my many miles. The middle lane seems the most dangerous to me, for that reason.
A couple observations though. I've passed slower traffic and put down some serious distance from them, over several miles, only to meet them again at a gas or food stop down the road. Tortoise and the Hair comes to mind. Also, the difference in time of doing 70 and 75 over an hour, is equivalent to the time it takes to get all your gear off at a stop (OK maybe not - but close).
My mileage also deteriorates drastically over 70.
All that said - I still can't drive slow.

Good post, I'm the same kind of rider. One thing I would like to add is passing traffic for me is safer riding because you have a better feel for where all the cars are around you. I agree the shoulder is a good escape route, but when I'm the faster traffic, more often than not, the lane next to me is empty and a good escape lane because I've placed myself there.
I hate left lane loafers....I am in sales and the only people on the road more then me are long haul truckers. On my wide glide, it enjoys 85 and the Twinkie Ultra enjoys 80....
Because it is illegal in most states to run the left lane if you are holding up traffic, not to mention it is very inconsiderate, also, that is the #1 complaint from motorists! Because you are running the speed limit, or more, is not a defense. (this is one ticket I truly enjoy writing to someone). Why the heck do you want to be in somebody's way? And why, in the interest of your own safety, would you let somebody follow you that close. Which they will do if you are holding them up!! I don't like anybody holding me up, and I will signal and pull off the road ASAP before I would be guilty of doing the same!! Now you can flame me all you want, but if you are one of those people who holds up traffic, words can't describe how low of life form I think you are! JMHO!! (p.s. if I comment anymore on this I'll tell you how I really feel!!)
Kudo's to you for writing tickets for that. Not much contributes to road rage more than that. Around here in rush hour traffic 12-15 over is the norm.
+5 to +10 over depending on the road and weather. 3000rpms in 5th gear puts me at 70MPH with room left to shift to 6th for easy cruise above 70MPH at 2800rpms
In Atlanta, I usually run between 70 and 80 mph. Any slower and you will get run over. Most of the time the cops leave you alone, but if you are on a sport bike, you will see blue lights in your rear view mirrors. i have run 70-80 mph from Atlanta to Daytona with no problems. After a ride like that, I check the bike the next day for loose bolts, tire wear and fluids.
never had a problem. Problem most of the time with these bikes is heat. If you can manage heat issues, you will be fine.

+1. The safest place to ride on a multi-lane highway is in the left lane and out in front of everybody else, which means you will have to exceed the speed limit a tad.....or two!
jump on the freeway, straight over to the #1 lane and set cruise control at 80 and leave her there. run all the way from SD to LV with no issues. stopped twice for gas and 80-85 cruised the entire way.

Or it could be a Toyota traveling at 135mph...And even then I do not ride in the left lane, pass and move over. I love the autobahns, until I hit a stau....
