Default 2008 FLHT overcharging

Hey all, I have a 2008 FLHT that on the way to work this morning the volt meter pegged itself and the speedo and tach backlights went out. It also has a check engine light that lit for a second. It went back to normal for a second then did it again till I got to work. I am thinking it is a voltage regulator but am not sure. Any ideas. Bike is 35 days out of warranty. Just my luck.

I would first connect a digital volt meter to the battery to see what the charging system is doing. My volt meter normally reads about 14 volts while the engine is running.

If you find the charging is working normally at 13.8 to 14 volts, then the volt meter on your bike may have gone South.

This is an article on how to test your charging system.

The best thing to do is take it to the dealer and let them diagnose it.

Default What did you ever find out was wrong with your bike?

I have a 2011 Heritage and although I don't have the volt gage I am currently having the exact same issue you had on your bike. You are the first person I have found that had the exact same problem. so, I would like to know how you made out on it if you don't mind. I know your post is a few years old, but it would help me.

There are helpful stickys in the Electrical section of the DIY forum, where you can find how to test your bike and diagnose the problem. You need a multi-meter.

Default what?

For the first time I find someone with the EXACT issue I'm having and you tell him "The best thing to do is take it to the dealer and let them diagnose it."
What kind of help is that? What is the point of a forum if you just tell him/her to go to the dealer?

Relax, ése. ..the dude said it EIGHT years ago...he has probably seen the error of his ways...and the OP has likely owned three or four scooters since then.

You can do the tests in the sticky in the Electrical section but you need a new voltage regulator...
