Once again we create our own problems by not sticking to the script, the manufacture suggest an interval that is the average life expectancy of a particular spark plug in their engine. 20K for regular plugs and 50k or more miles for the platinum. Its so easy to change even if your out on a long trip the accessibly and availability of spark plugs that fit the 96in 103in, and 110in etc. would be a very minor inconvenience if any, if you have a problem. Changing plugs all the time is not necessary. gmc hit the nail on the head with this one these plugs will not last as long as a car plug they are subjected to more heat and more ignition cycles.

sure the dealer wanted to sell you some plugs, along with the labor charge to install them. i have been using rg-12's since the mid nineties and haven't ever had a problem with them. they're the same as stock plugs but supposedly have some coating on the threads. i always use anti seize on the threads anyway though. the permatex silver type. it insures that you can remove them when needed. with the late model fuel injected bikes, there's not much need to replace the plugs till they actually need replacing. i may change mine in 2011, but only if the bike starts running weird. do it however you want to, it's up to you.

You don't have to change the spark plugs every 5000 miles but I do, which is once a year for me. The way I see it, plugs are cheap and peace of mind is priceless.

I wish I had money to throw away like some of you guys. Changing oil in all 3 hole every 5K miles, 5K mile plug changes... Why not change the fork oil every 5K while your at it?

Engine oil every 5K
Primary oil every 10K
Transmission oil every 20K

Its not cheap insurance, especially with syn oil, it gets expensive over the long haul.
