from what I've read in various magazines, the new tranny has straight gears in 1st & 5th, and helical cut in 2,3,4 & 6. Helical gears mesh better, are more expensive, and quieter. Baker Transmission has a fix for it, costs $800 & change for the kit. It replaces the 5th straight with a helical gear, and also they say eliminates vibration in the clutch lever.

Hello I just bought a 2007 softail it to has a tranny noise in 5th,I went back the next day to talk to the service dept he said all of the 6 speeds have the same noise,He stated at my first service at 1000 miles, they would mobli 1 syn in the tranny that it would take out 90% of the noise, and he some 100%.he allso said bikes with winsheld where worse i rode one with out a windshield no noise, This is my first HD i love it
5800 miles on my Ultra. Yes, I hear 5th gear (whine) and yes I hear the primary chain and comp. sprocket (can o' rocks). As for the noise? I'm over it. I know - until it breaks (if ever), it's the best Harley I've ever owned!
Yea 5th gear sounds like ****. Big clunk on starting the beast up and most other gears sound like BB's rattling around somewhere. Otherwise runs great. I love it. Two F$%^&&**( year warranty. Ride it like you stole it. 2007 Road Glide Rules!

Very disappointed in my new 07 Heritage. Not only do I have this loud noise in 5th gear, theres a flaw in the gas tank decal and now the tankneeds replaced. All of that and I've only owned the bike a week! Dealer wasn't much help. They recommended custom pipes. Wasn't the answer I was looking for after dropping all of that money on a brand new bike. GuessI should have kept the Roadstar!
I have an '05 rk custom. I would love to have 6 gears, even with the noise. So instead of complaining, just enjoy the new ride. If there is a fix, one will be presented and you will all get it fixed, and still have 6 gears. Think I will go with the dd6 from baker. I haven't heard any problems with them.
