pete: do you know what is in the fix kit. Details would really help out the rest of us.
My '07 RKC has had 5th gear chatter since Day 1. It sucks, but not enough for me to spend the bucks on the F6F. Below are the details on the F6F from the Baker website. I find it amazing that Baker would spend money building a solution to a problem that doesn't exist (according to MOCO).
Loud fifth gear is a very common complaint with stock Factory Six-Speeds. So BAKER DRIVETRAIN has stepped forward with an upgrade that will surely make your stock transmission sound so quiet that you’ll think BAKER built the whole dang thing! Our kit features helical cut diamond ground gears, 28% wider bearings, a 1/8” thick bearing retainer plate, and a billet aluminum bearing door. All this combines to give you the advantage of a quieter 5th gear, and no clutch lever walking. Additional features that the F6F offer are: [ul][*] No 5th gear whine[*] Reduces drivetrain lash in 5th gear[*] 12 pt. ARP fasteners[*] Billet aluminum bearing door – chromed[*] Quiet diamond ground gears[*] Heavy duty bearings[*] No wimpy snap rings[*] Direct bolt in assembly[*] Recal box – INCLUDED![/ul]
If you have the dreaded 2007 tranny clatter (not whine) then shoot me an email to mailto://chico@snakebite.com.
Please include your name and HD model. I personally don't think there are enough people on this forum for HD to worry about, but let's give it a shot. If you know of someone who has it but isn't on the forum, give them the email address as well.We probably need to account for at least 10% of the models sold. To put that in perspective we need like 40,000-50,000 owners/bikes..... Like I said, I don't think we can put up a number like that....But maybe we can have a Clatter rally at a later date.
Now if you don't have the clatter and you try to spam me watch out! Bad things man, really bad things.....
I have a new 07 and have not had noise issues so far, I do believe it is possible that there were transmission spec changes due to the problems stated here with the earlier bikes. I also think HD should at least offer the isolation drive system for all 07 owners installed for free and for those that can show a true transmission issue a free upgrade.
That said, I also think some of the people suggesting HD should install a free Baker transmission in their bikes are FOS.
Ok, as you will certainly know by my question...I am far from a mechanically inclined Harley rider. How does the Derby Cover relate to the transmission, other than it covers the clutch?
I noticed that celtlion has a non-stock derby cover on his bike, and he is not experiencing the clatter problem. I also switched the derby cover on my 07 RK Custom from the stock to the chrome flames. I also don't have the clatter.
Any chance at all this could have an effect on it?
Thanks for putting up with my inexperienced questions. I am just trying to "think outside the box."
Not Likely! The derby cover is just that, a cover or inspection cover for the clutch assembly, specifically the derby cover providesaccess to adjust the clutch.Would be nice if changing the cover would cure the clatter, not that simple I'm afraid.
I understand all your guys concerns about a wine in 5 gear but does anybody remeber riding an old shovel head or even for that fact an iron head sportster. Hell what about a open clutch pan head. You want to hear noise. Just asking a question?
rm... you sure do like to type.
I agree with ya..
but I got a Lemon,,, and going to dump it for a peach.. dont that make sense?
you are very vocal,,, and hope you can yank the right chains,, but Ive been here since day 1,,,almost a year now
seen many guys, such as yourself, end up on a dead end street!?
a bee never beats the bear.
if the 08 aint any better,,,,, I'll be first in line for a 09!!
Longsnow,,, HD's extended Warnt'y could cost up to almost 2k,, I'm putting that towards a 08,,, why take a chance? have the summer ruined with a bike all apart
Benn here since dayone with 07 as well.... don't go for the 08 just yet. Have a bro that just got one and guess what..... same noise as my 07. a little less in your face but still there.... he traded in his 07 and took a nasty loss. he's gonna try and take the bike back on saturday.........bet he is screwed.
Sorry to hear the 08's still have the noise. That just means the Moco will stick with their normal story for another year.
I would expect sales to fall off more though.
Baker's product is called the DD6 and is pretty expensive-I think you'd need to plan on spending over 2K on it and then the installation is going to run a bit due to the hours. They offer some options that drive the price up to around 3K if I recall correctly. A local dealer here in Oregon says they see twice as many issues with Bakers as they do with the stock transmission. I doubt it, but just passing it along. The same dealer has indicated that Harley Davidson recently sent out a dealer-wide mandate to their service departments that if anything other than HD's own fluid is used in the transmission it will void warranty. I am in direct discussion with one of the major manufacturers of one of these non-HD transmission oil companies and they were very upset to hear this. I also think it's unlawful for HD to make this kind of statement so am rattling some cages to get the straight answer. I was one of many who have put a non-HD tranny fluid into the bike in the hopes it will help quiet this horrible noise that all but ruins the riding experience for me. My suggestion on a Baker is wait for your warranty to run out at least that way you haven't ruined any (remote) chance of getting in on a recall or class action.
