This is government policy regulating the free market.

I'll avoid running the stuff in any of my vehicles, especially my motorcycle until it is a a last resort.

From: Cal., work in Saudi

I too work in the Middle East. The last number I saw was 17% of US petroleum is imported from Saudi Arabia, most of the rest of the Middle East exports go to Europe or Asia. Saudi crude is not high quality, somebody said it is used for home heating and industrial use which is also my understanding. They also charge less for it than the headline number you see on the nightly news.

Drilling in the Arctic is too expensive, I say leave it there until we really need it, like when the Saudi's start to run out. Industrial uses like chemicals and plastics may end up being more important than our need for internal combustion engines. I read a report somewhere about 10 years ago that said improving the US gas mileage by 1 MPG would save the equivalent of what we would get out of the Arctic. Even if they were way off and it is 2 MPG that is quite possible.

Most of us who have lived in the sandbox for a while would love to be a fly on the wall when somebody comes up with a viable 300 MPG car. Let's see how they react then....
