Default My Rineharts Fell off...

The latest in the litany of issues with the bike from hell. I took the bike to work last Friday and on the way home, noticed it getting hot, and also exhaust note sounding funny. Was only a mile from home, so I nursed it home, parked it, and went to get a beer. Back out in the garage, and guess what? Rear jug pipe has vibrated loose, missing one of the nuts, and the other one soon to come off. I was floored. When I looked closer, I did not see any evidence of LocTite, or even some type of lock washer on the nut. How the "F" do you keep this from happening again? And oh yeah, why did it happen in the first place? Everyone else raves about their true duals, and I like these, but I need to know how to keep this from happening again. I guess I start by not letting the dealer do anything else. Anyone else run into this, and what did you do to solve it?

Thanks,
G

Locktite is not used on exhaust, the correct nuts from harley are semi lock nut types and should have a touch of anti-seize on them and I have never had one back off, Id say maybe they were not torqued to begin with. As to others doing your work, this shows why its a good idea to do these simple tasks yourself. just re tighten evenly and keep a eye on it for the first few hundred miles and it should be ok.

If you use a locking washer, use an outer star vibration washer to lock the nut in place. As a foot note, in my weekly cleaning, I inspect everything on the bike and tighten anything that is loose.

I use a high temp silicon seal (as recommended by BUB) between the pipe joint. I do not use loctite I think the guys comments above are correct. I've got over 20K on my Rinehart 2:1 and no issue. Had 4K on my CVO with Rinehart true duals and no issues!

Guys,
Thanks for the suggestions! I am going to get two new nuts, and start to inspect them at every washing. Never ran into this before... My prob with other bikes always the opposite, I could never get the %$&#(((@&&&%'s to come off. I also should have done it myself... got intimidated by all that chrome and $$$ involved, could just see myself slipping and dinging up the new pipes... But the dealership butt reams have to stop. I found an independent that will do the stuff that I cannot do, and I will use him from now on. Met him through a tow truck operator....

Thanks again,
G

I put new mufflers on my 07. One thing I learned was what "feels" tight is still loose[&:] I was CRANKING the nut with a wrench and thought it was tight, but when I felt the muffler it was still loose. Ended up getting out the ratchet and used a socket and did as tight as I could. Then got out the small sledge hammer out and put the wrench back on. Hit it a few times and they are tight now!!!!!

It happens more than anybody wants to admit,,,,and not just with Rineharts. BTW, the thread size is 5/16x24. Don't ask me how I know.

I just back from picking up the nuts, and I was behind a guy in line with the same problem..... HMMMMMM.... But hopefully I can get it tightened down, and back on the road.... Any of you with Rinehart TD's have a SERT? I would love to get a peek at your numbers. My ride still runs VERY warm in traffic, leads me to believe that it is still too lean. I never got the dyno sheet from the tuner, so i will be asking for that again on Saturday when I see him. Would be interesting to compare numbers... Bike has 25 degree injectors, SE intake, and I run 93 Octane gas and Synthetic oil.

Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions and encouragement. Looking forward to Fall Riding!

Cheers,
G

Guess I'll put checking nuts and bolts on the muffler on my list of things to check when I wash my ride.

It is also a good idea to run the bike & at the end of the day, check those nuts again & retighten. Just don't overdo it & snap it off. I guess you are talking about the 2 on each header?
