windshields
I’ve cut more than a dozen. You don’t have to however on Softail, Vrod and other models that have mounting brackets, I remove all the hardware. This just makes it easier to handle. I mask the entire windshield and mark the cut line. The reason for masking is they can scratch easily. I have a band saw however many people have cut them with a saber saw. Cut outside the line, not too far because you sand down to your final mark. I use an upright 4” belt sander to get to the line. After this I work progressively to finer paper rounding the edge slightly as I go. The final is done with wet and dry to make the edge clear again. Again be careful not to scratch it during the sanding. All it takes is one slip and yep you scratch it. Remove the tape, do a final touch up with wet dry and you’re done. It really is easier than you know. You will find it easier not to slip if you keep your paper on a flat block. I’ve thought I could just do that spot with my fingers on the paper and rats they slip.
I did my 1st one yesterday. The hardest part is making the curve even on a tall to short shield. I taped the entire thing with blue painters and still got some scratches from the saw.
The easiest part was polishing the edge. Just running a block over it for awhile made it perfect.
