yeah, they look ugly. my 2004 road king custom, been to Oregon, from NC, 4 times, all with 20 in tall, 1 1/2 in chubbies. i bought it new, it now has 93,000 miles on it, and i have been deployed for over half the time that i have owned it.
my 'new' 2000 road king. finished building it in June 2010, and it saw Oregon in July 2010, sporting 12 inch bagger nations.....

I don't care what people think I love my 16" Custom Chrome apes!!! Got a 92 ultra classic and I am a big guy and having to slouch for a comfortable ride just didn’t work for me. I put on the 16" and have never been happier!!!!

Yep they do . They're the current fad. Actually they're a rebirth of a 60s fad. They'll go away. Just like you didn't see apes in the 80s or 90s. All styles cycle.

Ride safe! (and comfortable!)
i was getting a good laugh at this thread, and saw you had a question. i am 6'1" also. i had 20s on my old king, and i just built a "touring only" road king this past year, and 20s were not even open for discussion. been coast to coast a few times on them, and , NEVER AGAIN. not this guy.... shoulder, ouch......on my new "touring" king, i went with Yaffee bagger nations. 12 inches. they keep my arms stretched out, and keep my hands just below my shoulders. plus, being kinda wide in the shoulder, i hear ya on the "bad angle for your hands". had a bad problem with that and the stockers. these have more of a "straight bar" kind of design, that keeps my hands cozy for a long time. already got one trip from NC to Oregon on this one, MUCH MORE COMFY!!! plus they are 1 1/2 inch, so all the wires can stay tucked inside. only thing is, they have a hard angle need the hand grips. makes running wires internally a serious task. a buddy told me to try using a wire coat hanger, worked like a charm.

also, if you look at my avatar thing, you will see that my bars go over the fairing. not to fear, my fairing is aftermarket, and is 4 inches lower than a HD bat wing. so, they wont stick up over yours so much. just the points where the hand grips stick out will.

i have a few friends that are an inch or two shorter than i am, and they went with 14s. then they rode mine with 12s, and wished they had went with 12s.....
hope this helped, corb

I have the Harley pull backs on my EG. Would I be able to get away with putting 10's or maybe even 12's on without changing cables and brake lines. They are extened but I forget how much.

i wouldnt try it. dont have much experience on the batwing fairings from harley, mine is aftermarket, and the cables dont run through them. if you want to try it, i would first make sure that you had the longer ones available at your parts dealer. when we put a 14 inch yaffee bar on my brothers street glide, we already had the new cables, and he is a cheap *** sometimes, and was looking at trying to use stockers, but after looking at it, it def wouldnt have fit on the 14s. prob not the 12s either, maybe the 10s, but, i dont know for sure. wait another months or so, get all the parts, and put it all on at once. that is my advice. i change my cables out every year of so anyhow, but i put between 30,000 and 40,000 miles a year on my bikes, so wait until your stockers are about done, then do it all up.
