i was getting a good laugh at this thread, and saw you had a question. i am 6'1" also. i had 20s on my old king, and i just built a "touring only" road king this past year, and 20s were not even open for discussion. been coast to coast a few times on them, and , NEVER AGAIN. not this guy.... shoulder, ouch......on my new "touring" king, i went with Yaffee bagger nations. 12 inches. they keep my arms stretched out, and keep my hands just below my shoulders. plus, being kinda wide in the shoulder, i hear ya on the "bad angle for your hands". had a bad problem with that and the stockers. these have more of a "straight bar" kind of design, that keeps my hands cozy for a long time. already got one trip from NC to Oregon on this one, MUCH MORE COMFY!!! plus they are 1 1/2 inch, so all the wires can stay tucked inside. only thing is, they have a hard angle need the hand grips. makes running wires internally a serious task. a buddy told me to try using a wire coat hanger, worked like a charm.
also, if you look at my avatar thing, you will see that my bars go over the fairing. not to fear, my fairing is aftermarket, and is 4 inches lower than a HD bat wing. so, they wont stick up over yours so much. just the points where the hand grips stick out will.
i have a few friends that are an inch or two shorter than i am, and they went with 14s. then they rode mine with 12s, and wished they had went with 12s.....
hope this helped, corb
Check mine out i got 16" Custom Chrome Fat Bagger Apes I am 6'1" and they are shoulder hight and my hands dont fall asleep. they didnt cost that much and i like to black look. i went with the fat apes so i could hide all my wiring. All and all i LOVE them. When to sturgis, SD 2 times this year and rode the hills and let me tell you there is a huge difference between stock and apes.

Huh? Which bars did you get? Yaffe does not make a 1 1/2 inch handlebar...
Im thinkin you bought the "OEM Monkey bars" that Yaffe makes in 1 1/4"....
OK so now I am confused. lol "Apes" are a lot more comfortable. "Apes" are dumb! Really who cares what everybody else thinks. I know that I don't like the stock bars. I like the looks of taller bars. I hope the bike won't lose any handling with the new 21" wheel and the hopefully new bars. Questions for ya all with bars. How tall can I go so my hands are not over the fairing and still see through the stock mirrors if thats a option? I am only 5'9" so I am thinking of 10" or 12". Is there any major difference between the bars other than design? Can I use stock cables with 12" bars? Also what about grips, should a guy change them out too? Finally the last question is about install. Is it fairly easy to do the install?
I put 17" fat bagger bars on my ultra classic electra glide, I love them. I realy didt loose anything on handeling from what i can feel. The installation wasnt that bad just remember when you are doing it a digital camera is your freind. I documented from start to finish with mine. As far as the factroy mirrors you should be safe at 12" i went 17" and changed my bar mounted mirrors to fairing mounted mirrors and i love them, still can see around no problem. Hope this helped.
