Looks aside, how do they impact your low speed handling? Say 5-10 mph in a gravel parking lot doing a full lock U-turn - better or worse?
At low speed on my bagger with 17" i think it handles better because i am not crouched over the bars trying to turn. I am a big guy at 6'1" and i like being streched out a bit.

I dont know. I have Kromewerkss +2' Sweepers on mine.I could probably go with another 2 inch higher set of bars
Not sure what that would make in inches of height though.
I'm sure you believe that. But just be very cautious. Like drugs, alcohol, Sons of Anarchy, and many other bad, ugly habits, these things can sneak up on you. It is a slippery slope.
It starts with something innocent like sitting on a friends bike with apes. You get this rush inside. The dark side of your conscience is whispering, "You bad! You bad! Chicks will dig you." You jump off. Your feelings, emotions are twisted and conflicting.
You know its wrong but you can't help thinking about it. You begin to dream about it. Hide pictures of bikes with apes and look at them when no one else is looking. Stop at MC shops and run you hands along the long, sleek, smooth apes of other bikes.
Five years later, you have lost everything. Only hope is an AA (Apes Anonymous) 12-step program.
.
I may be just another DAB but i too have felt its sting. 17" apes are my passion of choice. WHAT CAN I SAY I AM ADDICTED!!!

I would love to have the $$$ to look "dumb" myself. Shopping around but can't decide between 12" dumb and 14" dumber. Plus, Wild1's or something else? The stock bars suck. They make my hands start going numb after an hour or so. They've got a really bad angle for my hands. Any advice or recommendations on height or brand? I'm 6'1" tall and want bars that take the cables inside. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
Ride safe! (and comfortable!)
Check mine out i got 17" Custom Chrome Fat Bagger Apes I am 6'1" and they are shoulder hight and my hands dont fall asleep. they didnt cost that much and i like to black look. i went with the fat apes so i could hide all my wiring. All and all i LOVE them. When to sturgis, SD 2 times this year and rode the hills and let me tell you there is a huge difference between stock and apes.

The bottom line is apes are more comfortable. Yes, on a few models they look hideous, but still more comfortable than low stock bars. Set up the bike to where it's most comfortable for whoever is riding it. Take two 6 foot riders on a Road King for example. The rider with the stock bars will be the one complaining after a 4 hour ride, not the rider with apes. Those that wonder about handling need to spend an hour on a bike with apes. I think they make the bike much easier to ride. Blow off an hour doing tight circles to get used to them and you'll never go back to stock bars.
Anyway, to each their own. If looks are more important than comfort keep your stock bars. Just don't whine and complain about your back after a long ride. And, NO, you can't ride my bike home, with apes, because your back hurts.
