Keep in mind that I'm not trying to be a smart a$$.
I was in your same boat. In fact, I already had all the parts to do a big bore upgrade to my 07 RG. That's when my buddy who sells HDs invited me to ride my new bike.
Long story short, I traded it and won't be looking back. This new bike has the 103 plus a better handling frame. I like the color too.
there's a kit that harley has which is intended to wake up the 103's in the tri-glide. it's part #27544-10. those tri glides are very heavy and this kit was designed to gain torque as well as horsepower. the kit really worked out sweet for my streetglide, two wheels, of course. 10.75 to 1 compression ratio, the 259-E cams which have .579" lift and the kit also comes with the sepst, which is the newer version of sert. this kit provided my bike with real world usable power, and it pulls much stronger than you'd expect from a full dress harley. to do it again, i'd do the exact same kit. i did include the timken/torrington cam bearings, vance & hines 2 into 1 pro pipe, screamin eagle compensator and mechanical compression releases, along with having it tuned on the dyno. it's turned out being the ideal combination for me. there are a lot of options available, take your time, and if you're having it done rather than doing it yourself, labor rates usually are cheaper during the blizzard months.
Thanks emwolb, I do plan to do it over the winter months. I was at harley dealer today and Im pretty sure they showed me that kit. It was like 1500.00, but it came with just about everything I would need. Im kinda tossing around which race tuner/ignition I want and which cams to go with.
that kit i mentioned includes the newer version of the sert, known as the sepst. screamin eagle pro super tuner. it also includes the 259_E cams which provide .579" lift. loads of pulling power from off idle to redline. the whole kit turned out very well for me, and the harley shop that did it, is now promoting that kit to just about everyone who comes in wanting the best bang for the buck when it comes to 103" upgrades. the sepst is the race tuner/ignition, and the cams like i mentioned are also included with the kit. all the parts work in concert to make for a very satisfying package.
Yea sounds like the real deal. Thanks for recommending it. I was tempted today but I will take my time. So what do you have for dyno numbers with this kit?
i'm at 102 hp and 117 torque,
the torque and power band are right there anytime you want. when i first rode it home and a few short rides after, while easing into the new motor, i thought my swingarm bushings were shot on my 14k mile 2008 streetglide. turns out that my friend was riding his roadking behind me and asked me why the *** end shifts out of position whenever i shift and give her the gas. wasn't the swingarm bushings at all, but rather the rear tire breaking loose. yeah, short version of all of this is, it pulls like a pissed off gorilla. just right. it's not like some builds that are honestly, too radical for daily use/comfort. set that cruise at 80 and it doesn't even recognize a hill. with that kit, while the heads are off, get them drilled for the manual compression releases, you'll need them when it's hot out with the fat=humid air. the dyno tuning is really needed with this build.
