Question Primary Capacity

I'm a newbie to H-D bikes My owners manual calls for 38 oz. for my FLTRU Is that what everyone is putting in or are you just adding a quart? Is the capacity different on rubber mounted engines from the counter balanced models?
Thanks

Stick with what your manual tells ya. No different than your cage if it says 5 quarts thats what it takes. You can't just dump in a ballpark amount and hope it all works out.

A quart is 6 oz less than recommended might not make a major difference over a short run but in long haul......

Everyone that has an '07 or newer uses 38oz. The difference came with the TC96 engine and the 6 speed trans. The primary design is a bit different and requires a bit more fluid to get the level up to the proper spec.

38 is right. When I change mine, It's always after I bring it to operating Temp.I first loosen the Torx bolts on the Derby cover slightly. Not enough to leak, but know I won't have a problem with any. I start draining the Primary with the bike on the jiffy stand. Then I put it on my Jack and raise it level. Always seem to get a little more oil out this way. When I refill it, I put in close to 38 OZ's, checking to make sure the oil is up to the bottom of the Clutch pack. You do not want to overfill it!

I've noticed the fluid will turn darker quicker if you under fill it.

I've always drained mine in a measured beaker. It's always been within an oz. or 2 of 38 ozs.

Just did my '08 FLHTC and I put exactly 38oz., I've got 32,500 miles on the stock original clutch and it still going strong, no slipping ...go with what the "book" says, can't go wrong.

Unless you remove the complete outer primary, then it is 45 ounces.
