Love my sundowner and apes combo. The stock seat and bar combo on road kings is bad for bigger people. I'm 6' 245# and with the stock setup my butt didn't sit in the seat and I had pain inbetween my shoulder blades. That's all gone now.
I'm 6' 4" and the stock bars on a RKC are terrible for me. They weren't too bad for reach when I bought the bike, but the bars would hit my knees at full lock. I rotated them upward, and it's been progressively getting less comfortable.
I also tried the police seat on my bike, it's coming back off in the spring as I wasn't happy with it. It rides comfier than all the others but for somebody at my weight (280) you have to run 50+ psi in the bladder to not get the feeling of being dumped on the back fender with the throttle pinned.
I'm usually good for about 5 hours in the saddle before my butt is screaming no more. I'd get the shoulder pain well before that.
After sitting on a bunch of bikes, I'm buying a corbin classic solo and either 14" or 16" apes. At your height you're probably not going to be able to get rid of the shoulder pain without swapping bars for something considerably taller. I doubt the seat will fix anything by itself. You definitely want to purchase it first though, as others have mentioned the seat moves you around a fair amount depending on what you buy, and may impact your handlebar purchase.
Not that you don't need to change bars and seat, but I'll bet that a lot of the pain you experienced was because you were cold, and you stiffened up in response to that. Once you ride with heated clothing (jacket liner and gloves at the very least; I use pants liners and insoles when it's very cold as well), you'll wonder how you ever rode in the winter without them.
Mustang seat and backrest for me w/ WO518 bars and hwy pegs all make 700+ mile days easy. The Mustang seat will make you a little bow legged when stopped-feet on the ground, but for a long legged person, not a problem. Gotta get some of that Gerbing stuff too.
