Bought my first HD last month after riding Honda for more years that I want to count. Its a 2007 StreetGlide and I have about 1700 miles on it now. Today I was on my way home and noticed that the oil pressure went to zero everytime I stopped and then went back to 33psi above 1000 rpm. Before today it went down to just 5psi at idle.
Is this normal? It has Syn3 in it. I love this bike and don't want to ruin it. My dealer is closed today so I can't call and ask them. Thanks for any help!!
Sounds a little low to me. My '06 S/G will idle at 16-20 PSI when hot. Hopefully your gage is messsed up, not the motor. The good thing is that you have the warrenty to fall back on too!
See what your service dept says before you panic though.
Syn 3 just sucks, that's all A good synthetic like Amsoil, Mobil 1 V-twin or Redline will make it run cooler. Also heat management will make your oil pressure drop, if your scoot happened to be going into heat management.
From the manual: Engine oil pressures will normally vary from 5psi at idle speed to 30-38 psi at 2000 RPM when engine is at normal operating temperature of 230 degrees.
Yup.....agree with everyone so far. Lots of riders don't care for the Syn3. Of all the synthetics out there, Amsoil and Mobil1 15w50 seemed to be the most popular on this forum. While you are at it, add a good synthetic hypoid in the tranny, like BelRay.
Don't sweat the gauge.......unless it goes South at 70 mph and 55 degrees!
We all went buggy-eyed at the gauge at idle when we first had our bikes.........we know the feeling.
Ok I let it cool down and now it registers 32-33 and stopped dropping to zero.
I read the manual and noticed it said 2-3psi however as soon as I pulled in the clutch, the needle would drop all the way to the zero peg instantly. That is what had me really concerned. I will change out the Syn3
