2010 RKC with ABS - Removing Upper Brake Line & other ABS Qs
Guys, does the fuel tank really have to be taken off to remove and replace the upper brake line on a bike with ABS? I am having WO502 12.5" apes installed with chrome controls and braided lines.
Does the lower line to the calipers also have to be replaced or can I leave that one alone and save some money?
Also, I assume the factory upper line is one-piece? Do most people go with a two-piece replacement like Magnum offers?
Do any of you have experience with Barnett cables/lines? My indy prefers Barnett over Magnum.
Keeping my fingers crossed that the bike won't have to go to the dealer for the computer scan after the chrome master cylinder and brake line are installed, but I will do what I have to do.
If the abs brake lines are opened, break the seal, they need to be re-calibrated by a hi $ machine at the dealership. So I have been told. Also, I think you will require both upper and lower lines on an '09 and newer.
Other people have gotten away with not having to take the bike to the dealer for the brakes by bench bleeding the master/new line before attching the other end to the ABS unit.
I'm sure the tool at the dealer is similar to what you use for automobiles, all it enables you to do is cycle the ABS unit to assist with bleeding as air usually gets trapped in the solenoids when you open the system up.
I will definitely try to get by without taking the bike to the dealer for the DTII scan. Hopefully this won't be an issue.
Looks like we are at odds over whether the lower (and very expensive) brake line has to be replaced. I'm not sure why it would as it is a completely separate line, but the HD parts catalog indicates that it is a required part for installing apes. Maybe someone who knows for sure will chime in here. Thanks, guys.
I replaced the upper line only when I replaced my handlebars with the wild 1 502's on my 2011 RKC and all I did was use a syringe and back fill through one of the front calipers. No problems and no codes.
