Pittguy- Thanks, but I would be surprised if yours does not come back. I hope for you, it does not. Mine started at 800 miles on the bike. Did it 2x within next 180 miles. Then never happened again for about 600 miles. Then just did it again 2x within 12 miles, Monday. So far has not done it again for the past 100 miles since Monday.

ORIGINAL: biganvil

I spoke with the service dept today and they told me that another 07 had just been in with the same problem. They believe it to be a loose ground from the start interupt to the ECM. They are to work on mine this Friday. Will let you know what happens.
Don't forget to post to us when you find out. Mine goes back in tomorrow.

Well dealer just called me back. Same old thing. No code thrown, checked all connections nothing bad. He is going to call HD and see if they will let him replace the ECM or something to do witht he ECM?

I told him they need to start replacing parts as this is my 3rd time in and I am ready to move forward with Lemmon Law Procedures.

Dealer Tech just called me back and HD Corp did authorize them to put in a new ECM which they have to order.

What is an ECM and what does it control?

Electronic Contol module, that says it all , it controlls everything. Its just like the computer in todays cars. Maybe that will cure it.

My 06 Ultra began dying mysteriously at about 1500 miles... finally wouldn't restart at all. My local dealer puzzled over it for a couple of weeks... and eventually found a faulty fuel pump wiring harness. An intermittent open circuit would kill the pump, then as the wiring cooled, it would make (usually) contact again.

If the ECM replacement doesn't cure it, it's something else to look at...

had mine at the shop since sept 25 for the same dying problem you're experiencing. dealer called on october 6 told me they put 300+ miles on it and it ran strong--no problems, and i should come fetch it (1.5 hours away). picked up the scoot with my wife trailing me in the jeep. got about 8 miles out---puked! called the shop and they came to get it.

last friday, 13 october, the shop called with an update. 400 more miles and no problems. he did tell me though, that he had sent a mechanic to h-d electrical training. the wrench asked the instructor about this "dying" situation and the instructor mentioned, although RARE, he had encountered a few machines that just seemingly died for no reason, with no codes and no regularity. long, short of it, he said a faulty ignition relay under the right side cover was the culprit. service manager told me it was a $10.0 part and he was just throwing it on and this should do it. AMEN!

I went through all this with my 2000 Ultra.
No codes, all electr. dies going down the road. Recycled the ign. sw, sometimes would restart, sometimes would'nt. Somtimes would have to cool down to restart. Harley had a recall on this problem and their answer was to replace the 40 amp main breaker with a 50 amp breaker. That worked for about 800 miles and then started up again. I never took it back for another 50a breaker replacement. The problem, as I see it, was the placement location of this main breaker. It's under the seat and placed very close the the rear exhaust pipe. With this main breaker being a thermal relay, getting hot, you guessed it, it will open causing total loss of all power to the system. I truely believe that replacing the breaker with a larger breaker was a stupid move on Harleys part. It was just a quick fix that did'nt last long. The true problem was location. You can change breakers every 6 months but if you haven't removed the heat it will just weaken the thermal spring in the breaker and it will eventually cut out again when it gets too hot. To prove my theory I put a 40amp car fuse in parallel with the 50 amp thermal breaker and routed the fuse into the side cover where there is less heat (not that the car fuse is suspect to heat) but it made it easier to get to if it ever did blow. That was six months ago and to date it has never died on me again. So check your location of the thermal main breaker (supplies power to everything) and see if it is too close to a heat source. If it is, either move it if you can, or do what I did. Where does Harley get their engineers ???
