Can i Get some input from those who have em', bout comfort, handling, do your hands fall asleep all the time???

He sure got a Lot more than he orig ask for.

He was only looking for input from those that have ridden with them - not if others like them or not...

I've got 16"s on my RK and I like them much better than the stock bars. I can lean back instead of hunch over forward. My hands don't fall asleep, but I did add cruise at the same time for extra comfort. I'm 6'3" so my hands aren't above my shoulders. The longest trip we've been on with this bike is 3700 miles, and that's fully loaded with a tour-pak. There were no hand or arm issues, just sore butt issues.
I say find a bike to sit on, then go for it if you like the feel.

I think apes look great on the right bike, and handling issues I don't believe, ever notice in motorcycle rodeos the ape hanger bikes quite often win. If I had a roadking I would probably have apes, there just plain cool and guys that have them love them..... to each his own.

Wow, i have to agree a lot of haters, I had 16's on my heritage and loved them, one of the most comfortable rides ever. I never had problems with cramping or hands falling asleep. I mean if you don't like the look that's your deal but no reason to bash, Personally I love the look and have seen many baggers that look great with apes and have never seen a road king with apes that I didn't like but that is the style I like, hey I may even Put them on the roadglide one of these days. to be honest they do have a different feel when it comes to steering but you get used to it quickly, it took me a while to adjust to the low bars on the roadglide and after 5K they are not near as comfortable.

Amen... What is with all the CR@P!! I highly doubt all the Ape bashers have ever even ridden with them... I had a Heritage for years and always had Wild1 504's they were great... When I got my RK I put 16's on 'em and I ABSOLUTELY love 'em... Do you all think its a conspiracy by all us Ape hangers...Hey.. Lets tell everyone they're comfortable when they are really not?? get over it...I've been riding since I was a kid...Do you think I'm gonna endanger myself for the sake of Image??? Pleeeaase... Who cares who puts what on their own bike... I swear this site is getting like kindergarten...

Sound advice for you right here brother!!!!

It's incredible the amount of negative opinions, and they arent subtle...

visit some gatherings, take a look at some biker bars... ask to sit and get the feel... I think you will find that teh bikers who have them love them and those that dont... well just dont.

get hands on opinions not some a$$hole who is going to bash them just because... wtf people, grow up, I swear my highschool kid is more mature than some of these pompous ****** on this site.

Get what you like... take your time and make an informed decision

GMoney,

Great bike. You have lots of upgrades that I have not made it to yet. I am still working on figuring out my back end. If you don't mind me asking what Faring are you using, what bars are those, and what wheels are you running (did you have a rubbing issues)?

Don't mean to barade you with questions, but I have an image in my head that I am going for and you are damned close in the front end department. Nice bike.

The wheels on GMONEY's ride are the new PM Judge. If everything goes right, I think he will be looking for a new set of wheels.....

(Subliminal message for GMONEY.......send me your wheels......send me your wheels.......send me your wheels.....)

Try riding at highway speeds with the fairing, you'll probably find that when you arrive at your destinaion you will not feel fatigued and beat up. You also have the option of listening to tunes. It's comes down to this question; do you want image or comfort! Although, with the right accessories you can maintain both on a bagger but APE'S aren't one of them. Just my 2 cents.

Doesn't matter what ANYONE says thinks of feels about YOUR ride unless they are stroking the check to pay for it. Period.

Now that that's outta the way... Apes actually IMPROVED the handling characteristics of the softail for me. Turning the bike full left and full right I was jamming my elbows into my sides. I put on 16" apes with a 2" riser and safe control was once again realized. In a cruising position my hands were within 1"-2" of being level with the shoulders. Nothing fell asleep ever ( except that one day I rode 500 miles and I fell asleep but that's a whole different subject!). best thing to do is beg borrow buy or steal the set you think you want and clamp them into place Temporarily ( so as to not scratch the chrome and render them un-returnable) and sit for a few minutes with the bike in a stand and your feet on the pegs. You'll know pretty quick if it's a good move or not.
I don't need them for the bagger 'cause the Corbin seat moved me back 2" and negated the need for them. You can bet your azz there would be a set on my dresser if they were needed!
I'd rather have people look at my "Stupid Looking scoot" than not ride it because it's not comfortable or dangerous.
Have a comfortable 1,
Moose

hey guys got a 97 roadking and i believe it has an electra glide fairing, like it but i also like the look of apes better, i want to take off the fairing and put on some 16" apes, what you think??? Can i Get some input from those who have em', bout comfort, handling, do your hands fall asleep all the time???
I've generally had apes on my bikes ('77 Ironhead, '03 FXST) before my RK. I have the RK highs on it. I wasn't afraid to travel long distances with either of my former bikes (as long as I had a can of oil along with the XL). Never an issue with hands going numb, but then my apes weren't above my shoulders. I'm 6'4" and apes really helped with my back and neck. I didn't have to hunch over low bars.

Also, I had zero problem negotiating the figure 8 in a box with apes. Maybe it's my size or something but there was never an issue.

My opinion is that if you want comfort, go with mini to moderate apes (no more than say 12.5). If you want it to look sick, go big brother. Whatever you do, do WTF you want and let the weenie naysayers ride their own way. Cuz you know the bottom line is it's your bike, right? Enjoy!
