It looks like my budget will allow about 13K for a used touring bike. I have found I really like the 2003 anniversary models in Silver. I have found a couple in the 20-30K mile range. At that price I will have some cash later this spring for any maintenance. Question, what would you do to the engine as far as maintenance to keep it reliable? I read about compensator upgrades and the like. I don't really want louder pipes this will be strictly for two up riding with the wife and I.

Good advice from 1FLHTK4ME about checking the cam chain tensioners. 30,000 miles is where you begin to see problems. You don't want the tensioners failing and squirting all kinds of foul crap through the system. The Twin Cam is a good motor with excellent longevity with regular service intervals maintained. Come on now ... get the checkbook out and get yoursefl "scootering"
One of the biggest things that made me comfortable with buying my Ultra with 31K miles on it was the fact that it had had the S&S gear drive conversion done. No tensioners to sweat about.
My budget was similar to yours, but then I chopped it back a little to account for the extra I would need: new helmets, comms gear, odds and ends to make the bike what I wanted.
think you could get a better deal than that, buddy of mine found 2007 road king for 12200.00, with 7000 miles on it. in this encomny there are good deal out there...just saying.but good luck, if that's the bike you want have it checked out by a good mech.would be worth the money to have any used bike checked out, so you want have any nasty surprises.
roger
That sounds a bit steep to me. With the economy the way it is there are lots of good deals to be had so I would check places like Craigslist and want a bike that was serviced regularly with the properly documented paperwork.
Thanks for all the replys. I just found a 2003 with 16K miles about 2 hours north of me. Guy is on hard times and is asking 12.5K but said he would call the back monday and get a new price for me.. Its the gun metal not the silver but I like both. He said its Bone Stock and had all work done by dealer with receipts. Looks like a winner. Hopefully can look at it soon!
I bought my 07 flhtcu on ebay it had 40,000 miles and with driverr backrest, pipes a/c, highway pegs, other misc chrome. I gave 11,300 for it with 600 more for shipping didnt think that was bad for a 4 year old bike
