I have now noticed that when I start my bike (09 EGC) I hear a tick (one time) somewhere in the upper engine area. I figure it was the heat shields or the header bolts that were loose. I tighten all the bolts a it still makes the tick on cold start only and only one tick. It does and does not sound like expanding metal (so figure me). Has anyone noticed this? Is there a relay that kicks on or off after the bike starts? I started hearing this about 2 month ago.

Maybe a lifter leaking down?

 

I think it takes at least that long for the oil to pump to the top end.

Ditto, Had that happen to me ever since the bike got hot once and the oil thinned to almost water. Its happened about 3 or 4 times now when cold, so with almost 30k on the clock Im putting in new lifters this winter.

 

My bike has 9700 mile on it. It makes that tick only once with no other problems. I am taking it to the stealer for the 10,000 mile service tomorrow. I know they will say "can not reproduce condition". Will see what happens.

 

I would try to be there when they start up your bike at the shop. That way you can point out the click.
