Those are chrome 5/16 - 24 socket cap screws with the button style head. Got the at Home Depot. Harley uses this bolt all over the bike so it looks like it came that way.
I painted the rod red just to have one small bit of color on a black and chrome bike.

Thanks. I'll have to stop by Home Depot here in town and see if they have any. Struck out at Lowes yesterday.
For the record - what size bolt do I need if I add one of those spacers to the front of the linkage that has become a recommended addition to this mod?

The spacer goes on the back and I think I used 1"1/4
FWIW, a couple pages back I posted info and pics on these fasteners from Ace as well.
Yeah I saw those...we don't have an Ace hardware store here. On the upside I did find the right stuff at Home Depot. They have a whole section of chrome button head/cap head bolts, washers, spacers and all that stuff.
So having now acquired some spacers, I revisited this and decided to add a spacer to the rear shift linkage heim bolt. I upgraded from the 5/16 coarse thread bolt that was 3/4" long that I had used for my original heim project and picked up a 5/16 coarse thread 1" long bolt and one that was 1.5" long.
In trying to install the the 1.5" long bolt (They had no sizes inbetween 1" and 1.5" length) I wasnt able to thread the bolt on, as it stuck out too far and contacted the primary casing. I doubt that a 1.25" bolt (if such a thing exists, I had no means to cut the 1.5" reliably) would have worked without interference with the case as well.
I had to go with the 1" bolt, w/ the 1/4" spacer and call it a night. I havent had a chance to road test it with the new spacer now installed, but Im curious to see if I'll notice any improvements.
Orderd two sets of heim joints and rods from Midwest yesterday for two of our bikes. Probably should have ordered a couple of left hand nuts too. Looking forward to this mod when we get back from the trip we are on. At this point we are sitting in London KY waiting for Wildcat HD to repace the drive belt that broke yesterday afternoon on one of our bikes (2001 RKC). Should be back on the road in a couple of hours.

you shouldn't need to order anything left handed. unless the rod you ordered (why not just reuse the stock one) has one left hand thread, one right hand thread.....
