why change the hk head unit
i dont see or understand why folks would change their srock unit when doing a amp/speaker upgrade.i havent had a problem with mine.
is their some mystical reason or just looks.
is there some reason that ranges would be different.
how about some help with this questions

I think that some people have a passion for sound quality that others of us don't have. Nothing wrong with that, just different strokes for differnt folks.
The HK head unit is without a doubt the best one I one. For others, it's the worst they own and want better.
No different than some are happy with the stock motor and some of us want a little more.
Now if my HK head unit actually craps out, I'll be looking for the best buy and reliability factor if I replace it.

The greatest thing about the Harmin Karden unit is also it's biggest down fall. The expandabily for all the available features such as Intercom, CB, GPS and so forth make the radio very complacated and somewhat trouble prone.
Sound quality can be improved like any other unit by the addition of an amp but there are only a few companies that make amps the will intergrate with the HK. One of the modes Ironcross can do is a set of RCA out connectors so it can work with more common amplifiers.
I have a Road King with a aftermarket fairing using a Sony Stereo and a biketronic amp and the sound is pretty good. However, I have nowhere near the functionality of the HK unit.
Somewhere down the road a new Ultra or Road Glide Ultra may be in my future. But I have my King so well set up for me it would be very hard to replace.
