Im looking at a 1997 police FLH, low miles and in great shape. Are these bikes as dependable as the newer 88s and 96 motor harleys. Any chat on this subject is welcome.
One of my riding buddies has a 92 EGC Evo and rides it all the time. He's a good wrench and keeps it up. Rode out to Sturgis with him last summer and he had no problem keeping up and no problems with the bike.
I've been riding a '94 Dyna convertible, factory-bone-stock, for 5 years and I can say that it's the best, most reliable, cheap to maintain and enjoyable to ride bike I've ever owned bar none, and I've been riding for over 55years and have owned many different brands including several H-D's.
I've owned one TC bike and it was a total POS from the get go. I'll never own another one.
My advice is to have the inner cam bearing and all the lifters replaced with the updated units (if that hasn't already been done) and then just ride it forever.

I didnt see the evo connection here?? Your 04 is a twin cam, so i guess that means you have owned two twin cams! lol
I had an Evo 99 Night Train, Granted I had a lot of work done to it but it was a great running bike, got decent mileage and could pass the Twinkies so long as they were stock. My brother is still runnin a 98 ultra classic his has 40,000 miles on it and has had no major problems yet
I rode the heII out of a 97 EVO COP RK... great bike. Simple power mix for an EVo is a cam, mill the heads, 2-1 Thunderheader, and a carb. Not huge power in these mills, but awesome legs. My fav's behind a Shovel. Go for it!!!
I just sold my 95 flhtc at 80,000 miles- my 88 FXRPolice has 78,000 miles.
The early injection can be wacky- carb is better (....I said early Guys)
Police will have upgraded electric system, make sure the wiring isn't damaged by the cop stuff being pulled off- see if the service records are available ( i got all the records for the 88 from the CHP).
Frame pretty much the same from early 80's on- brakes are pretty good, no match for that's available now, but enough that you can locks the wheels.
5 speed tranny
The evo motor is a great design- it kept H-D's motor-vated for 15 years. easy to work on, reliable, lots of aftermarket and factory parts and knowledge.
Some have had lifter trouble, not me- but something to think about, and if the cam is cahnged, DO replace the inner cam bearing.
Evo police motors may/ or may not have a special cam, missing emissions ( like evap canister- but that is noted on VIN so no problems with DMV if it is missing, it was not original equipment), milled heads up to .060" for 9.6:1 comp ratio, beefed clutch springs, and special ignition module, higher rev limit.
Not all PD's had these modifications
Keep in mind you are looking at a 15 year old bike- newer might be better in you can swing it- but if this bike is really good and well priced- then enjoy

keep in mind it is over 20years old i would go over it hard looking at all rubber hoses, bushings, bearings and cabels, with 20 year old gaskets oil leaks could be a problem, but evos do have a reputation for being dependable.
