That one's right on the button! Their demographic studies, average age, average use, etc allows HD to offer "unlimited" milage because they know that Mr BMW wants to park at the Country Club Saturday mornings and the real deal often lives up North where he's got 6 months of riding time. It amazes me how few miles are to be found on 5 year old "touring" bikes.

I'm also from northern Ohio and now live outside Raleigh, Nc. I went from 12,000 per year up north to 20,000 down here. But I know I'm in the minority,....so does HD.

This exactly why I have probably bought my last new Harley. I have an '09 RG now, 107 ci, crank trued, welded, plugged, balanced, Timkens on the left side. I have probably invested $4 - 6k extra in the motor. Coulda done the same thing to a ride with 7 to 10k miles on it. I woulda saved all that profit and set-up the dealer charges and thousands in depreciation.

Yep, a motor that has 12,000 miles on it and gets re-built has no miles on it, same as a new one.

How expensive and what exact tools are required to true cranks? I see a window of opportunity opening here if this is as bad as it seems it could be and the MoCo doesn't do things differently in the next 2-3 years.

Unless you are already set up in a machine shop type environment, it wouldn't be cost effective. You need mills and welders and everything. I'll shoot a picture today of one that we have done. I believe we charge $250 for the process. You'd have to do a ton of them to pay for the equipment you would need.

I paid $600 for mine to be trued, welded and balanced with pistons through Falicon and I believe Dark Horse costs about the same.

I would not trust the stock crank period. A friend of mine checked his crank at 2,000 miles and it was at .006, the '08 manual spec'd .003.

I never checked mine, I just bought a new one and sent it to Falicon. Gave the stock one to the guy that bored my cases. It only had about 2,200 miles on it but the bike vibrated quite a bit at speed so I figured it was out.
My 113" is buttery smooth compared to my stock engine.

600 doesn't seem bad. I'll have to check with the boss to see how much we get. I don't get into the pricing all that much. Do you know if they plugged yours or just welded it? I got 17,000 on my stock one, but I only had cams. I plugged, welded and trued it when I put the 110 on it. Mine was .003 with 17,000 on it and I do beat the hell out of it, so I guess I was lucky. But my current build added about 35 HP and 30 LBS of TRQ to it over the 96" stage II I had. So I figured i'd beef it up at that poing while it was apart.
