I've got a 2000 and the pull is easy...Might the cable be old or needing lube?

Lubricating the clutch cable works wonders for the clutch lever pull if it isn't too late. Once the cable is corroded inside the sheath, you might need a new clutch cable. But, I'd try that before I went the expense of a reduced effort kit.
