The backrest makes the ride much more comforatable to me, so yes I would recommend getting one.

No.

I had a Mustang solo and backrest for a short while. I expected to love the backrest (like so many apparantly do), but just didn't care for it. Sold the Mustang and got a Corbin and didn't bother to replace the backrest.

I would not go without one. I have the kind where you insert it into the holder that is attached on the fender, but I would recommend the one that you can adjust while on the bike, like the one below.

Mine came with one already installed. Tried it once for my trip up to Canada. Didn't even make it the whole first day before it filled the last empty spot in my saddlebag.
I was just glad I didn't invest the money in it.

The rider back rest is a "must have" for me. Wouldn't go with out it now that I know what it is like with it.

Have HD's rider backrest & wouldn't leave home w/o it - added comfort to me + extends riding time x10...

I wouldn't leave the garage without my Corbin backrest. Great back support and keeps you in a good riding posture !
