I have a 2005 Road King, 95 cu with 10.5 to 1 compression, Mikuni HSR 42 carb and cams. I bought the bike used with the work already completed. I am not sure what type of cam is in the bike. I had the bike dyno checked at Bike Week, they said it looked like the AFR was good or close enough to not want to tune it. I think they dyno guys were more into just doing Power Commanders. The bike pulled in 4th gear a 92 hp and 90 tq. I have a Daytona Twin Tec ignition installed set to the recommended settings by Daytona Twin Tec.
The issue I have is that in 5th or 6th gear, if I am just cruising along at a low RPM, if I want to get on it, it will ping a first. If I down shift it will be fine and no ping. I am not really lugging the engine, these motors should be able to accelerate without down shifting at say 60 in 5th gear. Does this sound like maybe I have the wrong cam for my riding style or a lean condition or timing issue? I am looking around for ane experienced dyon tuner in Jax FL, but they usually just do a WOT tune and I need a tune for the way I ride. Any advice?
I would say the added compression and possibly timing adjustment, is causing your ping. You have two options, get it downtuned slightly or downshift out of 5th for passing.
Well there is a third option, start riding were you can get 100 oct fuel all the time.
On warm days my SG does the same thing or if I go up to the mountians if so I'll mix in about 2oz. of Lucas Octane Booster and it runs real good with that. You might not be getting the octane rating at the pump.
