Default Removing axle end covers

The only thing standing between my newly painted front fender and getting the old one off are these factory axle caps. Does anyone know how to get them off without destroying them? Or, should I just count on ordering a new pair.

Factory axle caps?

Did you look for set screws?

Not to be to discriminate here, but if you can't get them off, should you be replacing a fender?
Mine are held on with two allen screws located wherever they are when installed, which are on the bottom side on mine.
But without a picture nobody here knows what type of caps you have.

See the set screw? Allen wrench, loosen set screw, and problem solved.

Hey, them look like mine! Give me back! LMAO

Oh yeah, and upon reinstalling them, the screws need to come to rest on a highpoint of the axle nut, cause their not long enough to reach the flat side of said nut. Yea another MOCO malfunction!

I have the smooth axle caps on mine and on the right side one, the tiny allen screw hole is now rounded out, so no tool works at all. But since the left will come off, where the axle nut is located and removed, I have always been able to pull the axle out, leaving the right cover in place.

On "most" of the H/D axle covers I have installed, there is a "longer" set screw that you put on the cap that fits on the nut side (usually the sloppy side!), so you can run it through and seat it on one of the wrench flats without it going all the way through and "falling in".
Note:
I am only familiar with the 06 - 11 model Softails, Dynas and Touring models though.

The short set screw fits on the opposite side cap. Most of the time that cap has a more proper fit on the round portion of the axle and the shorter set screw works on that side with no problems either.

Disclaimer:
They may not ALL be that way, but the two different styles (tapered and smooth styles) I have worked with went on that way.

Oh yeah, don't try to "wrench them down tight"....just snug them and they'll be fine.

Are you sure you even need to take the wheel off?

I took my stock fender off of my Street Glide and replaced it with a freshly painted Fatboy fender and did it all with the front wheel on the bike.

Unless you have some severe wraparound type fender you may not have to mess with the wheel at all.
