Going up to Laconia this year with the little woman,i was wondering what should i definitly do while were up there? hot spots, cool rides...etc...any help would be good.
Make sure to bring rain gear! As for rides,..they usually have two days for motorcycles only on the the Mount Washington Auto Road. It's a fun ride and the view at the top is great. There's also a coffee shop and weather staion up there. Pack a sweaters! There's quite a temperature drop from the base to the summit.
Rt 112 Kangamangus east then north to Mt Washington and the Notches (Rt 16 I think). You can do a huge loop riding east, north to Mt Washington, north then west, find Rt 3 and follow south. The lake ride is nice, but relatively short in comparison. The steam train from Weirs Beach to Meredith is relaxing. And, Castle in the Clouds is a nice tour. Beautiful view of the lake from the castle. Nice ride getting there too. Weirs Beach area is nice to experience, but the riding is better.
I agree with jimski, pack your rain gear and warm riding clothes. You never know what you'll run in to up there. Especially, if go up Mt Washington. It could be 80 and sunny at the bottom and 30 with high winds at the top.
Take Rt 112 which is the Kancamangus Highway over to Vermont and have the French Toast and P&H Truckstop, where it is made with bread made right there and the menus are in French and English. Then take Rt 302 back. Great all day ride.
Not sure how long you are planning to be there, but you may also want to check out Bentleys Saloon in Arundel Maine & Big Daddy's barbecue in Acton Maine.
Next I would also take a ride on route 1A along the coast from Hampton Beach to Portsmouth or Maine depending on how far you want to go. It's a beautiful ride on a nice day.
Pack somr warm duds the temperature drops off in the mountains at night.
Rain gear is a good idea.
All the other rides mentioned are good but if you don't live near the ocean and you have time take a run over to Hampton beach and run the cost line up to Portsmouth.
