Do I really need HD oil?

Default Do I really need HD oil?
Is there really anything special about HD oil? I know I need 20W50....wont ant good auto brand work just fine?

Any quality oil of the right specs will be fine.

Do yourself a favor and buy some Mobil 1 or Amsoil. The only thing special about the HD oil is the price.

no on the just use auto brand. no on needing just HD oil. if you do not use an oil made for motorcycles like HD oil or Mobil 1 motor cycle oil, you can use diesel engine oil. the issue is metal based molecules that help engines which are removed from regular automobile motor oils. These metal based molecules remain in motor cycle and diesel oil at different ratios than found in automobile oils.

I really feel like I want to stay with Dino. I hear lots of good things about synthetic but I also hear a lot of comments of people saying things sound noisier in the engine when they switched and if its true I think that would drive me nuts.

Yes I was aware that I needed to use at least Diesel rated oil. Although I didnt know why(thanks for the clarification as to why). I just really hate paying extra because a particular name is on a bottle when its not needed.

Synthetic runs cooler and breaks down much slower. 5,000 mile a change not unusual. Syn 3 has a low detergent value. It is poor in cleaning carbon build up. Mobile 1 20W50 or Amsoil or Redline are all good products.
If you do change over to one of these, stay with it.

In a word, NO. I agree with what has been stated above, and I use Amsoil or Mobile 1 in all my builds - seals permitting, since some of the stuff I work on is pretty old and only likes the dino stuff...
