So is it my imagination? I changed the pipes from Rinehearts to V&H and the bike runs a little
rich, a bit of poping when decelerating. The bike runs great and smooth but now that I am running rich it seems a lot cooler. Does that make sense? Please explain.
Also, now running rich seems to require higher RPM to get to any specific speed? Is that my imagination?
Two good HD dealer mechanics told me not to worry about a dyno run , because running a bit rich will not damage anything, on the contrary running a cooler engine makes it last longer. If that is the case then why is not everybody running a bit rich since we all like to get rid off the heat?
The popping may be caused by an exhaust leak between the header and muffler. On deceleration, it sucks fresh air back in the pipe and ignites causing the popping.
It is in your head. The HD ECM will adjust the AFR to 14.7 to one which is lean and the ration that produces the lowest emission levels when you change the pipes and/or air breather to less restrictive units.
I have had several big tube mufflers and you will always have popping and backfiring on deceleration with them. I have V & H mufflers now and have the same thing. I had D & D pipes on my last bike and no matter what they did or how many dyno runs they did it still popped. Pretty much figured it was the size of the muffler and lack of baffles that was the cause so I lived with it. -----I kinda of doubt changing mufflers richened up your bike though.
I am running rich by choice also anywhere from 13:2 to 13:7 depeding on the cell location in my map. Not all bigg mufflers have decel popping it is either an exhaust leak or miss tuned. I have Rinharts with PCV and aouto tune the base map had just a little decel popping but the auto tune has removed all of that and my bikr runs like a top.
