I've noticed that after I've been riding my ultra for a while and everything is good and hot if I kill the engine for a short period like say to buy gas or a pack of smokes when I come back the engine doesn't wanna start, it kind of grinds and hesitates. It has never failed me and doesn't do this all the time. I'm thinking compensator but not sure.
Just got the bike back today after having the compensator and the starter replaced by the dealer, what a big difference, rides like a new bike, more power also easier to find neural. I was having the same problems you are talking about locodude, as soon as the bike was warm it would make some real bad sounds while trying to start.
thats why most opt for compressoin releases when in the heads. try this...works good on hot motors. just bump the starter, a short bump. not enough to start. this will turn the motor over enough to open the valves and release any compression. then start as usuall.

very common problem. some have fixed it with a compensator upgrade, some have fixed it by replacing the battey, and of course there's the compression release. check your battery voltage with a volt meter. the voltage at rest with no load will tell you the state of charge in the battery. 12.25 is a 40% state of charge and 12.8 is a 90% state of charge. if your battery is not being fully charged after a good run, have it load tested.
Had them do the manual compression release but not the starter clutch when they did the 103 upgrade. It similarly had some hesitatation when warm to start. I had it load tested on two occassions and and second time they advised the battery was bad. I would advise you to have them load test the battery when it is warm. It still isn't as quick to strart as I would like... I may have to go the starter clutch route as well. Is it a Screaming Eagle starter clutch or just an OEM replacement?
