They are for the rider. If you don't want to mod your bike to let it and you ride cooler, then you should get some.
Yeah but I'd much prefer getting the engine to run cool to begin with. Get your engine to a proper fuel to air ratio!!!
I'd also suggest getting head pipes that are ceramic coated inside and out. It'll keep the heat in the pipe until it is passed out the rear instead of radiating it all over yourself.
a good tune will cool that engine down alot. Going to a 2 into 1 helps alot too. Gets that pipe out from under the seat. I know those 2 things helped my bike out tons.
I've tried a lot of shields (most listed above), but the one that keeps me coolest and that I've taken from scoot to scoot is made by Shamrock. Maybe it's not all dolled up, but I can tell you it really works. http://www.shamrockride.com/heatshield.html
the HD mid frame deflectors only benefit the rear rider....and only while the bike is in motion...they do nothing for the driver and nothing when needed the most which is at a stop. save your money and buy a parade fan and wire it to the ACC switch and run it off the B+ power connector.
