Well folks....thanks for the help in locating my oil drain plug!
Now would you be so kind as to point out the location of the transmission and primary drive drain plugs and FILL ports?
The pictures in the owner's manual are USELESS!
Thanks again!
Frank
If it is a toruing or dyna model the trans plug is located in the pan under the transmission. The oil plug is the one that is horizonal in the pan facing the front. The trans. plug is the one that comes straight out of the bottom of the pan.
If it is a Softail, the trans. plug is between the rear shocks. You will have to feel for it, or have the bike up pretty high to see it.
The Primary plug is below the derby cover at the bottom rear of the primary.
Thanks Bill!
The bike is a 2000 Ultra Classic.
I have locaed the plugs per your instrucions...THANKS!
I also see a chrome plug for adding the tranni fluid, but how do I do the primary?
Thanks for your help!.......I've learned alot here from you folks, and greatly appreciate it.
Frank
To add to the primary , you must remove the dirby cover, that's the big cover on the primary cover over the clutch. You add the new oil until it comes up to the bottom of the clutch basket with the bike level and upright (usually 28-32 oz.), then replace the cover and torque it down. You can probably reuse the "O" ring gasket over again, just make sure that you position it in the grove and that it stays there when you button it up. You should give some thought to getting the factory service manual for that bike , it will be a great help to you with some of the smaller things you wnat to do.
You can also add primary fluid through the inspection cover. The little square one that has four screws holding it. This might be easier, as I found you had to remove the rear left floorboard to get to the screw in the 10:00 o'clock position in the derby cover.
Also, my book specifies 32 ozs. for the primary on the touring model twin cam bikes. The Dynas and Softails take about 28 ozs., as did the 80" EVOs.
Frank, Everyone here is always more than glad to help. However, the $50 - $60 you spend on a manual you will come in time to view as the best money you spent. I know that it's easy to put off, and I almost didn't get one because I didn't plan to do much wrenching. Do yourself a favor and get one sooner rather than later. Just ny $.02 Art
Get the manual. After you pay the dealer a few times some really big bucks, it will be easy to justify wrenching on the bike yourself. It's not that hard, and mostly uses simple hand tools and torque wrenches. When adding fluids to the primary, it is best to add fluid through the derby cover access. You need never know if all of the fluid is out of the primary after you drain it, and if you just measure and pour, you can overfill it.
Don't be afraid to take it apart...someone will be able to help you put it back together.
